When I go to the Addon Repository, I see News with Images v4.0.1 as the current listed version:
But when I click "Download" it takes me to the Releases page - https://github.com/WBCE/News-with-Images/releases
Which lists version 4.0.0 as the latest version.
Alternatively, if I click the Repository link on the Addons page, it takes me to the Download page - https://github.com/WBCE/News-with-Images
which has version 4.1.0 listed in the info.php file.
Can someone please confirm which is the most recent Stable version.
When I try to upgrade from 4.0.0 to the 4.1.0 version, the upgrade does not complete... at least there is no success notice or other feedback, just a blank window in the Admin. How do I know if the upgrade was successfully completed? I checked my info.php and it says v4.1.0, but how do I know if all necessary upgraded completed?

The current stable is 4.0.1. The release was hidden on Github ("show 3 newer tags") I've changed the direct link now.
Updating from former versions of NWI should behave as usuual (either a green box with "update successful" or a red one with "already installed"). I just checked updating from 4.0.0 to 4.0.1, which worked without issues.
Please check the errorlog (Admintools > error log viewer) if there are any messages the concerning NWI update process.

Thank you for the clarification.
I was not having an issue with going from 4.0.0 to 4.0.1 The trouble I had with the upgrade was upgrading to ver 4.1.0 which is the version on the main page for News with Images on github - https://github.com/WBCE/News-with-Images
This page is also linked to on the Addons page "Repository" link.
The latest commit shows "new upgrade.php with all new database tables and changes"
I'll test again, but I tried a couple times and neither completed successfully, with no feedback.
I just checked ErrorLog Viewer and my log file broke it - blank screen.
Went into the file system and my php_error.log.php file is about 900MB!
Here are the Exceptions associated with my attempt to upgrade to ver 4.1.0:

Not sure if that helps.

News with images 4.1.0 is no stable version but "work in progress", that's why I pointed to the "releases" section of the GitHub repo. I'm sorry for the confusion, it's not so obvious there, which branches might work and which don't.
Actually, ther NWI version 5 is nearly ready for launch (only a small issue with copying/moving posts between different pages), but for the moment, you'd stick to the version 4.0.1.
Hm, 900 MB error logs should not happen. Maybe the module needs a kind of garbage collection, e.g. automatic removal or archive (zip) of older entries after a period of time.

I really don't want to drag this out for anyone. Maybe I just don't understand the github workflow (I understand the concept, but I only know enough to be dangerous) and how it is meant to be used by the WBCE end user. The are some modules on the WBCE Addons page which when you click download, a download file dialogue is activated, and others like NWI that the user is taken to github.
Here is my main confusion still. IF 4.1.0 is not stable, then why is it the version which is presented as the Main download version on the github for this module?
I'll walk you through my process as an end user:
I am on the WBCE github main page - https://github.com/WBCE
I scroll down to News-with-Images and click the link - https://github.com/WBCE/News-with-Images
to me this page presents itself as what should be the official stable version, with the full read me and a green link to "Clone or Download"... but it is version 4.1.0
Perhaps github is not meant to be used to peruse and download modules in this way by end users like myself. And I would never have thought of going to github to look at WBCE modules, except that like I said, there are modules on the addons page which send the user to the github to download the module. Then once I was on github, I naturally started looking, from the root page onward.
I hope this helps to clarify the confusion from an outsider's perspective.
As for the size of the error log, over 6 million lines (yes that is 6 000 000) are taken up by repeating these three lines, I presume until something broke or timed out or something:
2020-01-21T23:48:13+00:00 [Notice] /modules/news_img/modify.php:[96] from /admin/pages/modify.php:[165] "Undefined index: group_id"
2020-01-21T23:48:13+00:00 [Notice] /modules/news_img/modify.php:[106] from /admin/pages/modify.php:[165] "Undefined index: published_when"
2020-01-21T23:48:13+00:00 [Notice] /modules/news_img/modify.php:[106] from /admin/pages/modify.php:[165] "Undefined index: published_until"
I have renamed the old error log file and added a new clean one, and so far have not had any error entries. My plan is to do a fresh install of WBCE 1.4.2, as I am afraid there might be other unknown issues introduced when that upgrade to 4.1.0 did not complete properly.

IF 4.1.0 is not stable, then why is it the version which is presented as the Main download version on the github for this module?
This may be my fault. From the point of a module developer, releases are published every then and now, any time the author thinks this would be a nice milestone. The opinion the "WBCE project" / end user may have about the quality of this release is not the same thing. In this special case, the release of 4.1.0 turned out to be not as stable as it should be later on, so Florian suggests to use / keep the more stable 4.0.1 until 5.0 is ready. As an end user, you may also give the upcoming new version 5.0 a try - if you are not going to copy or move posts between sections -, but this is of course up to you. Versions that are still in development tend to be unstable - especially major releases. At the moment, there is one known bug left to be fixed, but there may be more that have not shown up yet.
I can clearly understand that this is confusing, but I do not have a solution. There will always be module releases that are better for a special group of users than others, or more stable than others. Florian is the one who can tell which version is better for "every day use" and which one is good for "power users" that are more adventurous. So it is always a good idea to ask him - what you did.
I'll try to state out more clearly which version is "good" and which is not when creating a new release.

I will change the AOR entry to a direct download of a stable zip instead of a Github Link.
The exceptions and warnings in your errorlog appear because for any reason the expected tables are missing in your database.
Beside of this, I'm a bit puzzled of the large amount of entries, because it seems to be a heavily frequented website then.
You do not need to delete the whole website, it really should be enough to uninstall / re-install NWI (if there are no entries yet), or try to update to NWI 5 beta (which is more stable than the 4.1.0 branch).
@webbird: I changed the default branch of the repo to the "branch_for_5.0.0", hope that's okay?

I have checked out that branch in my local repository, so it makes no difference for me.

NWI - I think we need to just accept that I do not understand, and that is okay. On the Github NWI page, there is "Default" (was 4.1.0, now 5.0.0), there is the Branch marked "Latest" 4.0.0, and you have linked to 4.0.1 as "stable" although there is no signifying title associated with 4.0.1 on github, it is just one of the "three newer tags". So, yes, as a non github user, this is confusing. But as I said, maybe end users were never meant to be looking through the github and getting versions for themselves. I'm okay with that. Continue the great dev work!
Error Log - This is a local dev site, so no there are no visitors, other than me. There were no entries in the log until I tried to install NWI 4.1.0
and all 6 million entries happened within about a 10 hour period after I attempted the nwi upgrade:
Start of entries
End of entries:
I'm going to stick with 4.0.1 for this website dev, but I would be happy to try/test out the new nwi on a new test site, what ver do you suggest. And can you elaborate on what you mean by:
if you are not going to copy or move posts between sections

That is really stange. There seems to be an endless loop somewhere in the modify.php.
if you are not going to copy or move posts between sections
If you move or copy one or more posts from one page/section to another, the moved/copied post still appears in the context of the source section (page, template, settings) instead of the settings of the target section. Beside of this, as webbird already said, the version 5 works well and has some interesting new features.
