Module DirList and Download gallery

I would like to add a page to my website listing files which can form a repository for registered users to access files. I have looked at the DirList module and Download Gallery and tried them out on the site. It appears that both can only access one folder containing files. It does not appear possible to have files in sub-folders unless I am missing something. Can anyone advise on this please?

If this is not possible using either of these modules, is there another which may be suitable?

TIA

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Files from different subfolders of /media can added to DLG manually, but only one after the other, which is quite an effort the more files should be listed.
I'm not so firm with DirList, but afaik you can choose for each DL section which directory should be read, so you would need to create for each subfolder a DL page.
Unfortunately there's no module which shows a complete file structure automatically, but on the other hand WBCE is a CMS and not a DMS. Maybe this task can be fulfilled better by tools like eXtplorer, nextcloud or sth. like this.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

I did wonder if the only way might be a separate instance of the module for each sub-folder. I'll look at a DMS as a possible solution. Thanks

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

I use DirList several times on a multilingual website. You can create a page and insert several DirList sections one below the other. Each section points to a different directory in MEDIA. They can also be nested. Like this:

Download-cutting
- Drill cutters
- Boring bars
Download milling
- Solid endmills
- Milling bars

How it looks in the frontend here:
https://www.korloyeurope.eu/pages/en/download-en.php

(it is the lower area with the text links).

I have created a hidden page and assigned it to a user group "Customers", in it there are then such DirList sections. When I create a new customer and assign the user group to him, he can open the page and access the downloads. Primitive but it works!

@byteworker
This sounds pretty much like my thinking on this. The potential users at the moment would be limited to the project steering group but some of it would become public in the future.
How does using a customer group to control access compare to making the page private?
I did originally think that DropBox might have been our choice but there was some antipathy within the group.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

WBCE gives you everything you need.

You can integrate users manually into the CMS. Mail address, name and password are enough.
You can also activate the self-registration function, but then you have less control of what happens.

I would create the users yourself, then assign each user to a specific user group.

The permission control is done for that group, not for each individual user.

A page with the downloads (DirList) is only accessible for this group, invisible for all other visitors. First create that page, than change the permissions to the group.  (See the screenshot = sorry in german)

If a particular user changes or need quit to the download, you take that person out of the user group and the downloads are no longer visible to that person.

Thanks @byteworker.
Sounds like it would work for me. I'll give it a try.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

@byteworker
I have set up a group with permissions only for:
Pages: View, Modify
Media: View, Upload
All other System permissions: none

Then in each page settings for the files, tick the group box.

I'm assuming this will mean, anyone in the steering group will be able to view all pages except directory normally but login for the directory. Other visitors just view all pages except directory.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Have you checked the advanced permissions settings? Do the members of the group need to be able to change pages, or only upload files in the media to a given directory? The DirList module does the rest.

Now you have to set the permissions of the download page to "private" = menu link is visible, content of the page only after login.

Then activate the registration function in the WBCE, Attention! only login not registration. This can be done with basic settings / advanced settings (see screenshot) for the function that allows users to log in.

The download page also needs customized settings (different screenshot). You can decide whether the user group can only see the page or whether it can also edit it.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Ah... if your template is handmade, there must be a login function on any position. Otherwise the Users can only login by clicking on the hidden/private page. Not the propper way.

Think you find more of that on:

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Not clear how to use the Login droplet.
Do you upload the php file to your server, then call the function using the login code in a code section? This then puts a box in the page.
In the code call, should the url point to the home page or the page which is protected?

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Just a minor issue, how can I ensure that a file is downloaded on clicking rather than opening?

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Ok, first the login. You can use the droplet "login box" that is in newer WBCE installtions on board. Simply put that in the footer area of your template:

[[LoginBox?redirect=url]]

You must use the doubble sqare brackets. Than the login function will show up when the option is activated in backend as we mentioned.

See here in live:

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

The download or opening problem of a file is first of all due to the type of file and how the visitor's browser is set up. PDFs often open in the browser, images usually do too. It also depends on the type of download file.

DirList usually opens all downloads in a new browser tab.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

Thanks @byteworker, I'll try to set the login.
On downloads, that may be a problem. Some of the files available are .gpx files, which are basically XML files. If these open in the browser they won't make much sense to many people, they are only usable in a mapping app. I'll have to look further into this.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

@byteworker
I have tried to set this up for a group with restricted access - Pages limited to  View and Modify content, Media limited to  View and Upload files. I then have a test user who is a member of this group.
When I login as this user I can see the list of  pages but can't open any of them, in Media I can see the image files  but the top bar of actions  is not showing so I can't upload anything. What else do I need to  do?

Also whatever I put in the login call for 'url', it appends 'website name'/account/ in front of it so it can't locate the correct page I just get an error  message ??

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

You need to assign the group to which the test user belongs to the pages the group should be able to access. (See help). Then the redirect should work too.
If you want to set the permissions for more than one page at once, use the Multiple Page Permission Setting Tool.

Re: Module DirList and Download gallery

@florian Correction, the redirect is still not working.
The login script is "[[LoginBox?redirect=www.kingdomofthepicts.co.uk/pages/home.php]]"
The page redirects to "http://kingdomofthepicts.co.uk/account/ … s/home.php"

I can't see where the "kingdomofthepicts.co.uk/account/" is coming from?
