WBCE Version: 1.3.1
PHP Version: 5.6.40
FolderGallery 2.0.14 (fresh install, not an upgrade from older version)
Installed latest FolderGallery 2.0.14. Selected Root Directory. Categories and images populated, and all can be viewed and is functioning properly in the frontend.
But, in the backend admin, when I click on any of the Category titles to edit, I get white screen.

As you are probably aware, the PHP and the WBCE version are extremely outdated. So there are probably functions in the FG which rely on newer versions of PHP and/or WBCE.
Without error messages from the logfile it's impossible to say what causes the whitescreen.

I am truly sorry. I've been out of the WBCE loop for a while now and when this website owner contacted me with this issue, I overlooked how outdated things were with their installation and server settings. Thanks for the wake up.

No problem. It's not that I'm not willing to help, I just have no test environment with these system parameters.
Anyway an update - if possible - might be a good idea. (And I hope then the error disappears...)

I know your willingness to help, that is never in question. I was not being sarcastic, I was being completely sincere. Unfortunately, I have not been able to be as involved with WBCE or website development in general for a while. I am embarrassed that I didn't take my own time to more thoroughly troubleshoot and recognize the cause of this issue. I selfishly just threw my problem at the forum/you. I'm thankful you didn't spend too much of your time, and, even so, you did help, as usual.
I updated the php version to 7.0, just to check, and that allows the module to work as expected, but other errors have popped up (which I expected). So, I plan to update WBCE from 1.3.1 to the current 1.6.3.
I am aware that there are things to be aware of in the release notes of 1.6.0, and 1.5.0. I have gone through the update process on other sites to 1.5.4, so I am aware of the issues to contend with.
My question is, can I update directly from 1.3.1 to 1.6.3 (taking into account all the release notes of 1.5.0 and 1.6.0)? Or do I need to do an intermediate step to version 1.5.0 (other) first?
Thank you!

You can't update if PHP 7.0 is the most recent version available on that server. You need PHP 7.4 at least.
Besides of that, a direct update should be possible. Be sure to have a working backup of the file system and the database before trying it, or try it on a working copy in a test environment first.
You might run into issues with the character set, e.g. that <?> appears instead of special characters like é etc. Unfortunately, there's little you can do beside fixing it manually after the update.
If the update process get stuck, it might help to remove ll 478-488 (Droplets update).

I appreciate your generous warnings. All backups have been done (as always). I'm comfortable with the process and am aware of the possible, necessary manual fixes. I just didn't know if a direct update was fine to do. This site is not critical at the moment, so any hiccups will not be an issue, while fixes are completed.
I have up to php 8.4 available to me. I already have a WBCE 1.5.4 working on php 8.0. I just tried 7.0 as a temporary test,
Thanks again.
